A plan for the future

Picture
Over the next 25 we years intend to make the Parish of Woodbury a fantastic place to enjoy wildlife.
By providing and maintaining habitats and with healthy food webs we will encourage biodiversity.
By linking various habitats together we will provide highways for nature
to help prevent inbreeding and allow animals to forage over larger areas.

To achieve our goals hundreds of people we will need to take thousands of tiny actions. Every little step taken will help but there will be numerous set-backs along the way. The ach
ievement of our goals will make the area a richer place to live and will benefit all members of the community

Improve Habitat

We are encouraging residents within the Parish of Woodbury to re-wild areas in gardens fields and verges as natural habitat. We will encourage the planting of wild flowers and the creation of fish-free wildlife ponds. By removing invasive non-native plants and pests we can create a healthy environment where natural flowers can thrive and make Woodbury a place where wildlife can flourish.

Watch & listen

Knowledge is power and we carry out surveys to record the wildlife that we have in the area. By getting a picture of the numbers and distribution of the local wild plants and animals we can target the areas where we can do the most good, and where species are in need of help.

Provide Shelter for Wildlife

By providing shelter for animals in our homes and gardens we can help to mitigate for some of the habitat that has been lost by housing development and changes in agricultural practices. We are having consultations with numerous wildlife organisations to plan the most effective way to provide and deploy artificial shelters for animals. Bat boxes, hedgehog homes, bird boxes and bug hotels are being supplied and placed at numerous locations around the village

Enjoy what we have

We  organise nature walks and lectures in and around the village to show people the wonderful plants and animals that we have here. We hold photographic competitions to showcase the diversity of wildlife that we have on our doorstep. We will engage with local groups, schools, and organisations to get people involved with nature.

Simple project that people can help with or replicate

Birds & Bees
Help improve the situation for local wildlife by feeding the birds and making bug hotels. Food is short for birds at this time of year and they need all the help they can get. By providing them with food and water they are more likely to survive the winter. By making a number of bug hotels you will increase the number of bees and insects in your garden - increasing the number of pollinators (which is great news for your plants) and providing natural food for the birds.

Bird feeders come in many shapes & sizes They can be home-made or purchased cheaply from garden centres. in late winter there are less seeds and berry's around and due to the loss of hedgerows many birds struggle to find enough food to survive the winter. In May the birds are looking for extra food to feed their young.

Many of our members take part in the "Big Garden Birdwatch"
More than half a million people from across the UK  take part each year by counting the birds in their gardens. The 2022event was held over the weekend of 29th to 31st January

The 2023
"Big Garden Birdwatch" is over the weekend of  27th - 29th  January

Bug hotels provide habitat for numerous types of bees and insects. A simple bundle of hollow canes or a bird house set up like the one above would be ideal. even holes drilled in a fence post will provide nesting sites. The more insects we have in the garden the more pollinators for flowers we have. They also provide food for birds.

If you would like a free bug hotel for your own garden please make contact via our Facebook group : Wild-Woodbury
